The calico, the prettiest and the youngest, the one her mother couldn't quite bring herself to part with, as selfish as that may be. She was just so small, looked so much like her mama...or maybe the heartache from letting go of the first three finally caught up to her. Either way the last born of the four would mewl incessantly! Demanding attention as she wiggled against the paws that held her back. She was hungry, you see! And so cold! She'd been content swinging in her mamma's jaws, albeit confused when the mewls of other kittens slowly disappeared one by one. She was determined not to let her own cries fade away! Mew! she screamed into the flowers and the meadows, MEW MEW! But no matter how loudly she cried, her mom did not stir. No, after traveling through the wetlands, the mountains and the shaded forest, the truth was that the weakness that had led her to this path, this cruel decision, had finally won. The mother of the four, her fur a duller cacophony of silver and pink patches like her howling daughter's, lay motionless. A small scratch on her cheek, a dewdrop tear mingling with it, breath fogging no more. But Calico still did her best to rouse the woman, pressing her little paws on those cold cheeks and pushing as hard as her weak little limbs would allow. Get up!! Listen to me! the kitten cried, naive yet to the differences between life, sleep, and death.

| [smear:#e6df19]LILYPAW[/smear:#eeb600:0] [smear:#e6a619]I just need growth[/smear:#e5e619:0] Lilypaw was scenting the air, a few pawsteps away from her patrol when the cries of a kitten and the smell of sickness and death slapped her across the muzzle. Her spine would bristle in alarm and she would call out to the other behind that she had found something before turning and running towards the cries. Was it the fox again? Had she and Golden not chased it far enough? If that kitten kept crying then who knows what predators they would summon to them? Bursting through the undergrowth of her home, Lilypaw would screech to a halt as she took in the scene before her. A mother, dead and unmoving, as her kitten insistently pushed against them in a vain attempt to wake her. The sight filled her with dread, and the apprentice only hoped her patrol wasn't far behind as she trotted forward and meowed nervously, "Hey now, easy kitten." She would move and attempt to move the small thing away from its mother's body. What was she supposed to do here? What was she supposed to even say? The need for herbs was limited, some had to stay to grow of course, but what they hadn't expected was to scent something of iron and sulfur. Blood. Black ears perked up and the patch of horsetail was forgotten as they followed the sour trail. Then a softer scent followed it and they picked it out as Lilypaw- was she hurt? Though the closer they got the more they could pick up on the soft cries of a kitten, a very hungry kitten, and Inkylotus flicked back their ears in response to the sound. Blood, a kitten and Lilypaw- something had to be wrong.
The young medicine cat moved quickly through the flowers and part meadow towards the source of the trail. "Lilypaw! Are you oka=," The black cat spoke quickly but stopped as they came into the overwhelming scent of death. It was sour and bitter against their nose, making them scrunch it up, and the cries of a kitten got louder. Though they found that Lilypaw was unharmed as they got closer to the young she-cat, "What is going on?" The sightless cat moved their head towards the strengthening scent of a body and blood.
Inkylotus wanted to help but they cursed their sightlessness and inability to access the situation without being able to touch everything. The texture of blood was thick and heavily wafted iron and warmth. They lowered their head until their nose nudged a little body a kitten, the source of the cries. Oh, they needed to get it back to camp! But who could nurse it? They didn't have a queen in the clan- Inkylotus flicked their tail back and forth as they tried to come up with solutions.

Before calico knew it, she was suddenly greeted by two other she-cats - neither of whom looked like her siblings or mother. Looking up at the first she-cat's eyes, Calico let out a wail, realizing in an instant somehow deep inside that face meant there was no fixing this. Her mamma could hear her anymore. Moving Calico would, fortunately, be an easy task as the kitten immediately aimed to wrap her paws around Lilypaw's leg, whimpering and mewling, but more than anything happy to feel the warmth of another living creature. "'M cold!" she exclaimed, crying again when the second molly, this one older like her mom, nudged her but moved away quickly. Calico held herself closer to Lily, afraid she'd be pulled away or that this molly, too, would grow cold. "'m cold m'cold m'col m'cold!" she chants desperately, still too young to know how to properly ask for comfort.
